Our two doggie daughters were let out out to play in the snow. I was looking out the window and saw them chasing each other (their favorite activity) all over the back yard. I saw they would kept swapping what I though was a clump of grass. One would drop it and the other would grab it and take off.
When I focused on it, I realized it wasn’t a clump of grass, but a dead field mouse. YUCK! I alerted my husband (with a dignified scream) and he came running downstairs. He spent the next few minutes chasing one of them with a treat. Boots finally dropped the mouse and I happily (while trying not to gag) held on open shopping bag to dispose of it. After a quick call to the vet, to confirm that they would be ok, we have all settled down.
The dogs, of course, keep looking at us, like we just destroyed all the fun they were having. Petunia, wanting to make amends, gave me a sweet and tender look and promptly burped in my face. Yeah, it’s fun having pups in the house.
What, no pictures?
No, we have the memories and sometimes that’s enough.
This isn’t the kind of things we expect our dogs to do is it? Bet you’re glad you don’t have cats – this can be an everyday experience in my garden. Sad to say, I have to leave them with it until I know it’s dead. I can’t bring myself to do the ‘final deed’ myself.
Oh, I really hope it was a one time occurrence. I was actually surprised that they caught one considering it was snowing and freezing outside. I would be in the same boat as you. I don’t think I would be able to kill it myself. Thankfully, that by the time we realized it, it had expired.
You could always buy them a toy mouse to play with, but it would never be as much fun as the one you confiscated!
I am trying to imagine what a dignified scream sounds like!
I am happy they didn’t do to the poor mouse what they usually do to their stuffed toys. I don’t think either my husband or I would’ve been able to stomach that.
Well, at least that’s one less mouse you need to worry about.
That is definitely one way of looking at it.
